A guide to lab-grown diamonds

What does LGD mean?

LGD stands for lab-grown diamond. These diamonds grow in controlled environments and have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. Their origin is different: one is grown in a laboratory, the other forms in the earth.

Lab-grown diamonds are different from diamond simulants such as cubic zirconia and moissanite. Specialist laboratory testing can identify a diamond’s origin. Read more about natural and laboratory-grown diamonds at GIA.

Look beyond the carat weight

When comparing pieces, ask for the individual stone’s grading information and the finished jewellery specifications. Consider its proportions, appearance in different light, setting and comfort alongside carat weight, colour and clarity.

Choose the shape and setting together

A round outline, the long lines of an emerald cut or a pear’s taper each give jewellery a different character. The metal and setting change how a shape sits on the hand or moves when worn. Try different proportions, especially for a piece you plan to wear every day.
